NOTOM 006: The CQD Project
A New Setup for Emcomm
As a ham radio operator, I’ve had the opportunity to assist with emergency communications during several natural events, such as 7.5 earthquake we experienced in the Amazon a few years ago.
Upon returning to Italy, I thought deeply about how I could continue helping people. Volunteering remains a part of my life here in Italy as well. However, I’ve noticed that global events and disasters are increasing dramatically. What recently happened in Spain deeply moved me. I asked myself: what can I do to give help in case on need?
What is needed?
- A constant power supply independent of the electrical grid, with solar recharging capability.
- An HF radio (100W).
- A VHF/UHF radio with integrated GPS.
- An interface for digital modes.
- Two telescopic aluminum poles for the NVIS dipole for shortwave communications and one for VHF/UHF antennas.
- A computer for digital communications.
- One VARA license.
- Various cables.
- A waterproof case for the equipment.
If you believe "The CQD" Project" is worthwhile and would like to participate, I’d like to let you know that a PayPal account and a GoFundMe project have been set up. All contributors (if they wish) will be acknowledged on QRZ.COM in the "DONORS" section.
We are organizing simulations starting in January. These will involve simulating a call for help in an unspecified area within locator JN65. The emergency-prepared vehicle will need to depart within 30 minutes toward the disaster area. Upon arrival, the station will be set up, and communications will begin on pre-coordinated emergency frequencies, first via voice and then digitally to transmit data on injuries and supply needs. We will also send low-resolution images.
At the moment, I have a Kenwood 480 and VHF/UHF handheld radios. With your help, I hope to prepare the vehicle for a complete emergency system.
Any suggestions to improve the emcomm setup are welcome. Please share your thoughts with a comment.
